In our experience as both local and long-distance movers NYC, there are plenty of babies coming to the Big Apple in the last few years. And, from time to time, we’ve heard numerous mothers say that they have trouble keeping them safe in the new environment. So, after writing quite a bit on the topic of relocating to NYC with a baby, we thought that it’s time to give you a different angle. We decided to tell you a bit about how to childproof your NYC apartment. Hence, here’s our experience and knowledge, ready for you to implement!
Right after your move, you will need to quickly implement a few measures
Childproofing your home is a process. So, we understand that you won’t be able to do everything as soon as your movers drop you off. However, there are always a few things which you can do. We have two options. One, you could keep your child away from the boxes and packed items. This way you won’t have to childproof your NYC apartment right away. Instead, have a room which you unpack last, with a few of your child’s safe toys. They will keep themselves entertained for a while, as you unpack the rest of the home. Of course, with this option, it’s always good to have a relative or a babysitter watch them, just in case.
The other option when moving house with a young child is to involve them in the process. This is, though, only if your baby is old enough to participate. There are plenty of games and stories with which moving house to NYC can be introduced to young children. If you have them pack their own toys after playtime, this time they could pack those in a moving box. But, the important thing to remember is how to stack the boxes. After you move into your new place, remember to childproof your NYC apartment by not stacking as much as possible. By leaving the boxes near the floor you’re lessening the chance of them falling over and causing an accident.
But, you also need to childproof your NYC apartment long-term: Keep it clean
Once you get rid of the moving boxes, childproofing your NYC apartment doesn’t stop. In fact, this is where it starts. If you have any items which you’ve been considering getting rid of due to safety reasons, do so beforehand. When you get a moving estimate NYC it’s best to have these items already gone. Or, they will raise the costs of your relocation. And, you should continue this trend if you want to childproof your NYC apartment.
It might seem like a silly idea but go down an all fours in your new apartment. This is the likely height your child is. So, take a look around and decide what should be done in order to childproof your NYC apartment. Any sharp objects should be removed or safely shielded. Door stops are another thing to consider. If you want to childproof your NYC apartment also look at electrical outlets. Can your child reach any of them? If so, they should also be protected or in use.
Then, there are some places which your child shouldn’t be able to access: Keep them out
As you’re settling into your new NY lifestyle with your child you’ll notice that, unfortunately, keeping the apartment clean isn’t enough. This is when we suggest implementing this method in order to childproof your NYC apartment. We mentioned it a bit earlier, too, when we were talking about keeping your child safe after a move. There are some areas in the house which simply aren’t meant for a child to be in. When we unpack your home as a part of the services we provide as local NYC movers we always suggest isolating these areas. But, let us give you an example.
Let’s say that you want to childproof your NYC apartment by leaving as much space accessible to your child. Then, you should consider using height, cabinets and locked drawers to your advantage. Most parents use this trick when unpacking their kitchen. Keep the chemicals and dangerous substances locked at all times. As for breakables, we always suggest height in order to babyproof your NYC apartment. These items won’t be hard for you to reach and they will stay safe from your child.
Finally, limit the area which is a ‘free zone’ to childproof your NYC apartment: Keep them contained
Take a look at the floor plan of your future home before calling your long-distance movers NY. Have you planned out what is going where yet? This is the perfect time to do so! It’s also a great chance to decide how to best childproof your NYC apartment. This part of our little instruction manual really comes in when combined with the one above. If your child is really young, a few well-placed sofas and baby gates are a great idea. They will both limit your baby from wandering about and give you a clear view of them. Though, it’s when they’re a bit older than the trouble arises.
If you want to childproof your NYC apartment for children a bit older you’re going to need locks. Luckily, in an NY apartment, there won’t be too many chances for mishaps. Most of the accommodation available for rent is, after all, quite small. So, when looking for a place be sure to think about childproofing it as well. As we’ve mentioned, a few locks on kitchen cabinets and drawers with knives are a good precaution. Also, any bathroom products which may be harmful should be kept under lock and key. But, there also may be a room which you don’t want your child getting into or safety reasons. If you have a room with easy access to the balcony or large windows, this is the case. Either make them unable to be opened or consider completely removing these rooms from accessible ones.
Finally, remember that children are curious. Pretty soon, no matter how well you childproof your NYC apartment you will have to let them experience everything for themselves.
