Moving can sometimes get expensive and stressful. From planning to buying supplies to finding a moving company and so much more. It is understandable if you get overwhelmed during the process and you may wonder whether the best option is to hire movers or do it yourself. There are great benefits to both and it all depends on your preference. We will be discussing both the pros and cons of moving yourself or hiring movers.

Deciding on which option is best for you will need you to assess your situation in terms of time, money, and physical ability, so keep that in mind when making your choice.

Moving yourself

Moving yourself means you will do everything alone without the help of packers or a moving company.

There are many reasons why some people choose to move themselves and the biggest reason is money. Everyone is different and we all have different plans and “pockets” therefore, sometimes moving yourself is the best choice.

  • Saves money- most people like to save some money whenever and however right? So if you can move yourself, do it and save yourself a bit of money. You can use that money towards new furniture or gas etc. This is one of the biggest pros of moving yourself.
  • Work at your own pace- moving can get tiring and requires a lot of energy. When moving yourself you can work at your own pace and not feel rushed. Take your time packing, but don't take too much time or leave everything to the last minute.
  • You have control of everything- you’ll have control of all logistics and planning of your move. This means you can place your items exactly where you want them to be during the move. Having control of every aspect of the move is great for most people as it eases worry.
  • Pack everything the way you want- packing yourself also allows you to pack things how you see fit and how you want without anyone interfering with the process. No one can tell you what you can and can’t pack so you’re able to take any and everything you want with you.
  • Fun road trip- you can make moving fun and have a music-filled road trip with your family or alone. Play some good music and stop as often as you want to sight-see especially if you’re moving long-distance. Stop for food and some fun pictures to capture and make memories.
  • Have family and friends help you- always a great idea to invite family and friends over to help you pack and move. This will make the process go by faster and will save you a lot of time.

  • Too much time packing- can take too long to pack everything yourself and to move it, especially if you don’t have help.
  • No help- no friends or family available to help with the move is going to make things hard.
  • Can get expensive- moving yourself can get expensive. You need to buy things like packing supplies, rent a truck, and more expenses that come with the move.
  • Going back and forth/more than one trip- if you have a lot to move, sometimes you may need to go back and forth a couple of times. This could take a few days or a whole day depending on where you’re moving to. This can get tiring and mentally exhausting.
  • Truck rental- you would have to rent a truck yourself. This means going to truck rental companies and finding one that'll be big enough for your items. The more things you have, the bigger the truck you need and that means paying a lot of money.
  • Gas can get expensive- gas can get expensive especially if you are moving long distance or if you'll be going back and forth a couple of times.
  • Stairs- if you have stairs and have to move furniture, this can be hard and challenging and even worse if you don’t have help. It’s also a safety issue as you can miss a step and injure yourself.
  • Loading and unloading- loading and unloading a truck requires a lot of physical strength, so get help if you can. If not, this will be a very stressful task for you.

Hiring movers

There are so many benefits to hiring movers. If you are moving at the last minute, movers and packers would be the best option for you. There are so many other benefits to hiring movers even if you aren’t moving at the last minute. Movers are probably the best option if you’re financially able.

Hiring movers saves you time

  • No worries about moving everything especially heavy items- you won’t have to worry about lifting, loading, and unloading any items. Movers will handle all this, saving you time and energy.
  • Long-distance moving- getting professional movers for long-distance moving is always recommended. They know exactly where to go and how to get to the area promptly.
  • You live in a building with no elevator- this is great when you have movers. They'll be responsible for doing all the ups and downs especially if you don’t live on the ground floor of the building (this applies if you live in an apartment) or if your house has more than one floor.
  • Not much time to pack and move- if you don’t have enough time to pack and move, movers will do it fast and efficiently for you. They know how to work fast so consider hiring them.
  • Have a lot of furniture- if you have been living in your home for several years, it is very common to have accumulated a lot of belongings. Or if you live in a big house. Movers are convenient in this instance.

  • Expensive- moving companies can be expensive especially if you’re moving long-distance, during peak season, weekends, holidays, or if you have a big home with a lot of items.
  • No control of your items- once the movers leave your house, you have no control over what happens or when the items will get to you (sometimes). They can however give you an estimate as to when you will get your items, but everything else is out of your control.
  • Furniture can take longer to get to you- some unforeseen things can happen on the road and may delay your items from getting to you as planned. So be aware of this and pack essentials with you if you can.
  • No insurance- some moving companies don't offer insurance, leaving your items at risk. Some will, but most don’t so it’s better to insure your furniture before the move.

Moving is a big deal and comes with its good and bad things as with everything. We hope this will make your decision a bit easier. Always choose the best option for you depending on your situation. Remember to always research and plan so you have a stress-free move.
